Kate O'Connor has won Northern Ireland's first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games, triumphing in the heptathlon. O'Connor, who was the favorite heading into the event, delivered a commanding performance throughout the two-day competition.

She began the event strongly on Tuesday, leading after the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.54 seconds and clearing 1.82m in the high jump. Despite challenging conditions during the evening session, which saw her record a throw of 12.85m in the shot put, O'Connor rallied. She achieved a season's best time of 24.14 seconds in the 200m, narrowly missing her personal best, and secured victory in her heat.

O'Connor accumulated 3,731 points after the first four events, holding a 49-point lead over her closest competitor. She further extended her advantage on Wednesday morning with a jump of 1.82m in the long jump and a season's best throw of 52.85m in the javelin, increasing her lead to 258 points.

Her dominant run concluded with a first-place finish in the 800m, crossing the line in 2:10.45. This victory marks Northern Ireland's first multi-class gold medal in athletics since Dame Mary Peters won the pentathlon in 1974. O'Connor's teammate Anna McCauley finished eighth overall, despite being the second-fastest in the 800m race.

O'Connor is scheduled to receive her gold medal on Thursday at 18:30 BST. The heptathlon took place at Scotstoun Stadium.
