Kai Wagner, Birmingham City's left-back, has announced a surprising return to Major League Soccer (MLS), departing the English Championship club just seven months after his transfer. Wagner, who spent the previous seven seasons with the Philadelphia Union, stated that his decision to return to the United States was driven by family considerations.
"Family comes first," Wagner said in a statement that he described as "one of the hardest messages I've ever had to write." He explained that the choice was difficult but necessary for his children and their future. Wagner and his wife, Jenny, have three children, all born in Philadelphia. He emphasized that his decision was not a reflection of his feelings toward Birmingham City, which he said welcomed him and his family warmly.
Wagner's move back to Europe in January followed years of transfer speculation. He had previously been linked with clubs such as Leeds United in 2022. During his tenure with the Philadelphia Union, Wagner earned three MLS All-Star selections and left as the club's all-time assist leader. The transfer fee for his move to Birmingham City was reportedly just under $4 million.
The defender made 16 league appearances for Birmingham City. His departure has elicited mixed reactions from fans, with some supporting his decision to prioritize his family and others speculating about external influences. Wagner himself expressed that he was unhappy to be leaving the club.
The Philadelphia Union celebrated Wagner's return, announcing, "Our left back is back home." His return marks a significant, albeit unexpected, development for both the player and his former MLS club.
