Jude Bellingham has offered his perspective on a mid-game confrontation with Lionel Messi during the FIFA World Cup semifinal match between England and Argentina. The English midfielder stated that the exchange was a simple discussion about a foul and was not a serious incident.
Cameras captured Bellingham and Messi appearing to argue and gesture at each other during the first half of the match, which Argentina ultimately won 2-1. Bellingham told reporters after the game that the interaction stemmed from a disagreement over a foul.
"We were discussing a foul, actually," Bellingham said, as reported by the New York Post. "It was nothing bad. I’m sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal [out of it]. But it was nothing big, really. I thought there was a foul earlier and he said: ‘What about the one on me?’ I said: ‘You’re strong enough to take it.’ You know what I mean?"
Bellingham also expressed that it was a "privilege" to play against Messi, whom he considers "one of the best."
The confrontation occurred as Argentina, after trailing for a period, advanced to the World Cup Final with two assists from Messi. This match marked the first encounter between England and Argentina since 2005 and was characterized by several tense moments.
Separately, Bellingham was also involved in an incident after the match concluded. Video showed Bellingham approaching Argentina's Valentín Barco and patting him on the back of the head. Reports suggest this reaction may have been in response to Barco entering the field and celebrating during the game, despite not being an active participant. Bellingham could potentially face disciplinary action for this interaction, which might affect his participation in the third-place match.
