Footy journalist Pete Badel was reportedly involved in a heated exchange with Sydney Roosters prop Spencer Leniu in the team's locker room after their 24-18 win against the Broncos on Friday. Despite a significant difference in size and stature, Badel, described as weighing around 65 kilograms, refused to back down from the larger player.
According to James Hooper on the Rugby League Inside podcast, Leniu confronted Badel upon seeing him enter the changing room, reportedly telling the journalist he was not welcome. Hooper noted that Badel, known for his assertive reporting style, stood his ground and told Leniu he would not tolerate any abuse.
The confrontation reportedly escalated to a point where other individuals intervened to de-escalate the situation. Hooper described Badel as having "let a little hand grenade off in the dressing room" and emerging from the encounter.
Podcast co-host Brandon Strange later suggested that the friction between Badel and Leniu might stem from a previous story broken by Badel last season concerning Leniu's confrontation with Jonathan Thurston. Strange's research indicated this incident could be the root cause of Leniu's strong reaction.
Badel, an assistant sports editor, is recognized for his ability to write both feature stories and break news, with a particular strength in the latter. Hooper characterized Badel as a journalist who can "piss people off" and "rub people up the wrong way" due to his direct approach, often placing his recorder close to subjects immediately after games to capture reactions.
