Josh Hoover made an immediate impact in his first start for the Indiana Hoosiers, delivering an "efficient" performance in the team's season-opening 52-16 victory over the North Texas Mean Green. Hoover, a fifth-year senior, threw for 231 yards and four touchdowns, completing 81.2% of his passes (13 of 16) and achieving a passer rating of 285.0.
According to FOX Sports Research, this marks the first time in the 21st century a quarterback has thrown for four or more touchdowns in their inaugural start for Indiana. Hoover also played through a facial injury sustained in the second quarter.
"Our goal today was to come out, operate, just compete and play our game at a high level, not hurt ourselves and take advantage of the opportunities we got, and I thought we did that today," Hoover told FOX Sports reporter Jenny Taft after the game. "Obviously, there's going to be things to clean up, like there is every week, but I thought it was a good start for our guys. And I'm happy for everybody."
Hoover, originally from Heath, Texas, was a consensus three-star recruit in the Class of 2022 and ranked 42nd among quarterbacks in his class by 247Sports. He initially committed to Indiana in 2021 before ultimately choosing TCU.
He transferred to Indiana in January after four seasons with the TCU Horned Frogs (2022-25). At TCU, Hoover sat behind Max Duggan during the 2022 season and then took over as the primary quarterback in October 2023 after starter Chandler Morris suffered a knee injury. In the 2025 season at TCU, Hoover amassed 3,472 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and a 153.4 passer rating, completing 65.9% of his passes. Over his three seasons as TCU's starting quarterback, he averaged 3,209 passing yards, 23.7 touchdowns, 11.0 interceptions, and a 147.8 passer rating per year, with the Horned Frogs posting a 19-12 record in games he started.
Hoover's arrival at Indiana continues a trend established by head coach Curt Cignetti. In each of Cignetti's three seasons as Indiana's head coach (2024-26), the Hoosiers have found their starting quarterback through the transfer portal. In 2024, Kurtis Rourke, a transfer from Ohio, led Indiana to an 11-2 record and a College Football Playoff appearance, eventually being drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. The following season, former California quarterback Fernando Mendoza transferred to Indiana, leading the Hoosiers to their first national championship and becoming the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL draft.
