Knicks guard Jose Alvarado, a Brooklyn native, is aiming to inspire young New Yorkers with his journey, especially after the team's recent championship win.
Alvarado, 28, grew up in the Roberto Clemente projects in Williamsburg and is the only player on the current Knicks roster from New York City. He expressed that being from the city and experiencing this success is "the best," and he hopes his story demonstrates to local kids "that there is hope."
His father, Jose Sr., a union electrician, moved the family to Flushing when Alvarado was 8, seeking more opportunities for his son in sports. Alvarado credits his father's hard work for creating a supportive environment.
Following the Knicks' championship-clinching Game 5 victory, Alvarado gifted his game-worn uniform, including his jersey, shorts, sneakers, and headband, along with his NBA champions t-shirt, to his father. He noted that his father cherishes every accomplishment, displaying them like trophies.
Alvarado shared these thoughts from the ESPYs red carpet at Lincoln Center, where the Knicks were recognized with the award for Best Team.
