Infielder Jon Berti announced his retirement from professional baseball on Thursday, concluding an eight-season Major League Baseball career. Berti, 36, shared his decision in an Instagram post, expressing gratitude for his time in the sport.
"After a lot of thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from professional baseball," Berti wrote in his post. "It’s been a hell of a journey, full of ups and downs. I’m very grateful for all the opportunities and lessons that baseball has given me over the last 15+ years."
Berti thanked the Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins, New York Yankees, and Chicago Cubs for the opportunities he received. He also acknowledged his family and friends for their support.
Berti played for the Yankees during the 2024 season, joining the team in a three-team deal just before Opening Day. He appeared in 51 games for the Yankees, contributing to their American League championship team. However, his season was interrupted by a calf strain in late May that sidelined him for over three months. He made his first career start at first base in Game 2 of the American League Division Series due to injuries to other infielders, becoming one of few players in MLB history to start a postseason game at a position he had never played before.
His MLB career began with the Blue Jays, who drafted him in the 18th round in 2011. After spending time in the minor leagues, Berti made his MLB debut with Toronto. He was later acquired by the Miami Marlins, where he became a key player. During his time with the Marlins, Berti showcased his speed, stealing a National League-leading 41 bases in 2022. In 2023, his final year with Miami, he posted career bests in batting average (.294), home runs (seven), and RBIs (33).
Berti also represented Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year, batting .375 with a home run.
He concluded his professional baseball journey with the Yankees, who acquired him seeking infield depth. Despite injuries limiting his playing time, Berti was part of the team that reached the American League Championship Series. He last played in MLB with the Cubs in 2023 before being designated for assignment.
