ESPN anchor John Buccigross has revealed his picks for the Mount Rushmore of SportsCenter anchors. In a recent interview with OutKick, Buccigross named Chris Berman, Keith Olbermann, Stuart Scott, and Scott Van Pelt as his four choices.
Buccigross, who is approaching his 30th anniversary with ESPN, stated that Chris Berman was the first name that came to mind, calling him the builder of the program and a representation of the everyday sports fan. "He was the everyday sports fan, the king of Middle America. He just loved sports, and that came through every night," Buccigross said.
Keith Olbermann was Buccigross's second selection, praised for his intelligence, writing, and historical knowledge that elevated the show. "His intelligence, his writing and his knowledge of history took the show to another level," Buccigross noted.
Narrowing down the remaining spots proved more challenging for Buccigross. He considered several other prominent figures who have anchored SportsCenter.
Craig Kilborn was highlighted for bringing comedy to the show, described by Buccigross as a unique and genuinely funny talent. Scott Van Pelt was recognized for his development into an exceptional interviewer and for the quality of his "One Big Thing" essays, especially given the demands of a solo show.
Stuart Scott was called a "comet" for his distinctive approach that made him a pop culture star recognized even by those who didn't regularly watch ESPN. Dan Patrick also received mention for his understated and effortless anchoring style.
After deliberation, Buccigross finalized his list, placing Stuart Scott among the top for his impact and star power. The final spot was a close call between Patrick, Kilborn, and Van Pelt. Ultimately, Buccigross chose Scott Van Pelt for his versatility in interviewing, writing, delivering highlights, and connecting with viewers.
Buccigross's final Mount Rushmore consists of Chris Berman, Keith Olbermann, Stuart Scott, and Scott Van Pelt. The anchor has been with ESPN since October 1994, not only anchoring SportsCenter but also covering NHL games.
