Jimmy Rimmer, a goalkeeper who achieved the rare feat of winning the European Cup with two different clubs without finishing either final, has died at the age of 78. Rimmer's passing was confirmed by Aston Villa, where he was a celebrated figure.

Rimmer's career was marked by periods of success but also by unfortunate circumstances that kept him from playing in pivotal matches. He was part of the Manchester United squad that won the European Cup in 1968, though he remained an unused substitute in the final. His debut for the club came a few months prior in an Easter Monday match against Fulham.

Later, Rimmer found himself in contention for European Cup glory again with Aston Villa in 1982. However, a collision in a league game just five days before the final against Bayern Munich resulted in a severe neck injury. Despite attempts to treat him, he was forced off nine minutes into the match, with Nigel Spink replacing him. Rimmer, who had missed only one game in five years for Villa prior to this, was devastated by the turn of events.

A Career of Quiet Achievement

Rimmer began his career at Manchester United, emerging from their youth system. He later moved to Arsenal in 1974, where he became a key player in the mid-1970s, succeeding Bob Wilson. During his time at Arsenal, he earned his sole England cap in 1976 against Italy. His goalkeeping career was also notable for his time at Swansea City, where he played on loan and later served as caretaker manager.

Despite his significant achievements, Rimmer was known for his self-effacing nature. He often downplayed his own accomplishments, preferring to credit the team. He reflected on his time with Manchester United under Sir Matt Busby and credited former United goalkeeper Harry Gregg for his coaching and guidance. Rimmer also spent time coaching goalkeepers in China for three years.

Rimmer played for major clubs across England and Wales. He passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind a legacy as an outstanding goalkeeper who, despite not always finishing the biggest games, was a vital part of successful teams.
