Two-time Super Bowl champion Jimmy Garoppolo is not ready to retire from the NFL, according to reports. The 34-year-old quarterback, who spent last season as a backup for the Los Angeles Rams, had been considering retirement throughout the offseason after not signing with a team in free agency.
However, Garoppolo is keeping his name on the market and would return to play in the correct situation, NFL Network insider Mike Garofolo reported. There are no teams actively pursuing the veteran signal-caller, and an injury to another quarterback may be a prerequisite for Garoppolo to join a roster.
Might a return to the Rams be on the cards? The team recently drafted quarterback Ty Simpson from Alabama, and Garoppolo could potentially compete for the backup role alongside Stafford and Stetson Bennett. Adding Garoppolo would offer a seasoned option for the backup position for the Super Bowl front-runners.
Another potential landing spot mentioned was the Arizona Cardinals, who reportedly showed interest in having Garoppolo compete with Jacoby Brissett. The Cardinals' interest, however, does not appear to be active at this time.
Over his 12-year NFL career, Garoppolo has played in 85 games, starting 64. He spent 55 of those starts with the San Francisco 49ers, leading them to Super Bowl LIV. He holds a career record of 43-21 as a starter, with 15,828 passing yards, 96 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions. His Super Bowl victories came as a backup to Tom Brady with the New England Patriots.
