New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is undecided on whether starting quarterback Geno Smith will play in the team's upcoming preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith is currently recovering from a sore ankle that developed after the team's joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Smith's ankle began to swell after the second of two joint practices with the Buccaneers last week. While the discomfort has kept him out of early preseason action, head coach Aaron Glenn had initially planned for Smith to play a series or two in the preseason opener, barring any health issues. The trend of teams resting starting quarterbacks in the preseason to mitigate injury risks was evident in the recent slate of games, with 20 out of 32 projected starting quarterbacks not participating in their team's preseason openers. In seven of those 16 games, neither of the starting quarterbacks took the field, including the matchup between the Jets and Buccaneers where both Smith and Baker Mayfield were inactive.
