FIFA has issued a two-game suspension to England defender Jarell Quansah following his red card during a World Cup match against Mexico. The suspension means Quansah will miss England's quarterfinal fixture against Norway and potentially a semifinal match should the team advance.
The incident occurred in the 54th minute of England's 3-2 victory when Quansah was shown a red card after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review of a high tackle on Mexico's Jesús Gallardo. The foul was not initially called by the on-field referee.
England played the final 36 minutes of the match with 10 men but secured the win. The team is also contending with injuries to other defenders, with Reece James nursing a hamstring issue and Tino Livramento sidelined with a calf injury. This situation raises questions about the team's defensive lineup for upcoming matches, with players like Djed Spence, John Stones, or Trevoh Chalobah potentially being deployed at right back.
Manager Thomas Tuchel expressed frustration with the VAR decision-making process, questioning the consistency and application of reviews. "Where does this start and where does this end now?" Tuchel said. "Can we overturn [Quansah’s red card] or not overturn it? What’s going on? Where to draw the line is the question that I ask. I have no answer to that."
The English Football Association reportedly explored options to appeal the ban, referencing a previous ruling involving U.S. striker Folarin Balogun. Balogun had received a suspended penalty for a red card issued through a similar VAR review process. A politician also formally requested FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider Quansah's red card.
