World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the U.S. Open due to a right knee injury, the Italian tennis star announced Friday. Sinner stated that despite efforts with his medical team, he requires more time to recover.

"We have been back on court in Monte Carlo over the last couple of days and have realized that I still need more time to recover from my right knee issue," Sinner posted on the social media platform X. "I’m obviously very sad and disappointed, as New York has a special place in my heart. I was very much looking forward to coming back and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there."

Sinner has not competed since winning Wimbledon last month, where he defeated Alexander Zverev. He had previously withdrawn from the hard-court tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati, which serve as U.S. Open warm-ups.

The 25-year-old Sinner won the U.S. Open in 2024 and was the runner-up in the 2025 final, losing to Carlos Alcaraz. He has had a strong 2026 season, holding a 44-3 record with six titles.

This marks the first Grand Slam tournament Sinner will miss since his major debut at the U.S. Open in 2019. His absence will be noted in New York, though fans will see the return of Carlos Alcaraz, who announced his comeback from a right wrist injury on Thursday.
