Thousands of fans flooded the field at Accor Stadium in a celebratory pitch invasion following the South Sydney Rabbitohs' 26-24 victory over the Newcastle Knights. The match marked a significant birthday celebration for former player Jai Arrow, who turned 31.
The stadium buzzed with a party atmosphere throughout the game, with red-and-green party hats distributed to the 30,113 attendees. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was present, witnessing Arrow cut a large birthday cake during halftime.
Arrow, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and forced to retire, remains an active figure in rugby league. He was honored with the duty of carrying the State of Origin shield onto the field prior to the decisive match.
Following the Rabbitohs' win, the celebration continued as fans joined Arrow on the field. His former teammates serenaded him with a rendition of "Happy Birthday," solidifying the team's place in the top eight.
Rabbitohs captain Cameron Murray expressed the team's dedication to Arrow, stating, "We know how much (Arrow) means to us, and all the boys know how much he's given to all of us in that change room." He added, "But at the end of the day, we're out there and we have to turn up and perform to the game plan that we practise."
Players on the field also incorporated the familiar "bow and arrow" celebration into their try celebrations as a tribute to Arrow.
The NRL community has shown significant support for Arrow since his diagnosis. The Rabbitohs have been particularly active in their support, making "Jai July" a notable celebration of Arrow's impact.
The victory also marked the end of a 10-game losing streak for the Rabbitohs in matches without key players Cody Walker and Latrell Mitchell. The team had to overcome the absence of winger Dayne Jennings (knee) and five-eighth Jayden Sullivan (concussion). Back-rower Euan Aitken, who experienced breathing difficulties in the first half, was later confirmed by coach Wayne Bennett to be in good condition after battling a virus during the week.
