Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town have unveiled a comprehensive £30 million upgrade to their training ground, Playford Road, incorporating advanced technology aimed at providing a competitive edge. Among the new features are technical urinals designed to monitor players' hydration levels through regular urine analysis.
The club broke ground on the facility less than a year ago with the goal of improving facilities for both the senior men's and women's teams, as well as for academy development. The previous renovation of the training ground occurred in the early 2000s, and by the time of the club's promotion to the Premier League for the 2024-25 season, the facilities were considered outdated and insufficient, with players utilizing a mix of original buildings and temporary structures.
The newly renovated complex features a range of new technologies to support the team's transition to top-flight competition. Players will have access to boot-drying technology similar to that used in Austrian ski resorts. Additionally, a bone density scanner has been acquired from the United States to facilitate on-site medical assessments.
Player-focused amenities have also been significantly enhanced, including a new hydrotherapy pool, hyperbaric chambers, cold plunge pools for recovery, a state-of-the-art gymnasium, and an altitude training room.
Ipswich chairman Mark Ashton stated that he believes the Playford Road facility is unmatched in the region. "There's nothing like this in east of England," Ashton said. "You probably have to go as far as Tottenham to find something on this level."
Ashton also noted that the upgraded facilities were instrumental in attracting new manager Gary O'Neil, who joined the club from Strasbourg earlier in the summer. The chairman highlighted that prospective signings no longer need to be sold on future plans for facility improvements, as the new complex is already in place. "I remember standing with Liam Delap in a muddy field here trying to sell him the vision. Now I'm not having to tell prospective signings that there's something going to come two years down the line, maybe, if we get planning permission."
Ipswich's ambitions have been scaling up since their takeover by US investment fund ORG in 2021. Further investment has come from Three Lions and Clara Vista Partners. Portman Holdings LLC became the majority shareholder in December 2025.
To ensure their stay in the Premier League is more enduring than their last, Ipswich has also been active in the transfer market. Manager Gary O'Neil has reunited with former Strasbourg players Julio Enciso and Abdoul Ouattara in deals reportedly worth up to £47.3 million. The club has signed ten players since the transfer window opened.
