Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti drew attention during Big Ten Media Days by taking a shot at the Southeastern Conference (SEC), suggesting some teams in the league engage in excessive complaining.
"I mean we don’t run a hype machine up here in the Midwest," Cignetti stated. "We believe everything’s earned, not given. And when we fall short, we say, ‘We fell short.’ We don’t cry a river, whine and complain. All right? And that’s why we’re the best."
Cignetti, who led Indiana to a national championship in his second season as head coach, has earned the right to be assertive, according to some observers. The Hoosiers were reportedly dominant the previous season. However, his comments quickly drew a response from SEC supporters who highlighted Indiana's upcoming schedule.
Critics pointed out that Indiana's early-season slate does not present the same level of competition faced by teams in the SEC or other major conferences. For example, Indiana's first six opponents are listed as North Texas, Howard, and Northwestern, followed by three more less-demanding matchups. In contrast, during a similar early stretch, LSU is scheduled to play Clemson, Texas A&M, and Ole Miss, while Texas faces Ohio State, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, and Georgia plays Oklahoma and Alabama.
Despite the criticism of his team's schedule, Cignetti has maintained a confident stance, asserting that Indiana's success is earned. The exchange has fueled preseason college football discussions, with the season opener less than 30 days away.
