Arsenal legend Ian Wright has voiced his strong disapproval of the club's handling of forward Gabriel Martinelli, describing the situation as "uncomfortable." Martinelli was notably absent from Mikel Arteta's squad for Arsenal's opening Premier League victory over Coventry City.
Wright stated that while he understands the club might be looking to move players on, the manner in which Martinelli is being treated is not respectful. The winger, who joined Arsenal in 2019, has been a consistent performer, contributing 11 goals and seven assists across all competitions last season. However, his playing time in the Premier League has seen a decrease, with only 11 starts in 30 top-flight appearances last season.
"The way he’s been treated at the end here, I know they might want him out, and there’s a lot of people saying, 'yeah, maybe it’s time for him to move on,' but there’s ways of doing that and it should suit him as well, how he wants to leave," Wright said.
Martinelli was also excluded from the squad for the Community Shield. This lack of involvement, coupled with the club's reported signing of Christos Tzolis and the presence of other wingers, has left Martinelli in an uncertain position. Wright suggested that a player of Martinelli's caliber deserves better communication and consideration regarding his future at the club.
Arsenal began their title defense with a commanding 3-0 win against Coventry. Despite this, Wright emphasized that Martinelli's contributions over the years warrant more respect. The club reportedly values Martinelli around £50 million, but he is reportedly only open to offers from top leagues. Galatasaray and Roma have shown interest, but Martinelli is not keen on a move to Turkey.
Mikel Arteta has stated that the club is actively looking to improve the squad and bring in more quality and depth, acknowledging that market opportunities are limited and do not solely depend on the club's wishes. "There is more that we want to do," Arteta said. "Because every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth, we need to do that."
