Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith made history at the European Championships by winning the men's 400m gold medal on his home track in Birmingham. The victory marks his eighth career podium at the championships, tying the men's record held by French sprinter Christophe Lemaitre.

Hudson-Smith crossed the finish line in 44.17 seconds, completing a treble in the event after previous wins in 2018 and 2022. The 31-year-old athlete competed before a home crowd at the stadium where he trained as a junior and which now features a stand named in his honor. He joined the local Birchfield Harriers club at the age of 10.

Following his dominant performance, Hudson-Smith acknowledged the weight of expectation by walking into the north stand to touch a banner bearing his name.
