Erling Haaland has humorously called on Wayne Rooney to fulfill his pledge to row down the River Mersey after Norway's unexpected advancement to the World Cup quarter-finals. Rooney, a BBC pundit, had stated on the broadcast that he would undertake the challenge if Norway progressed to the tournament's final eight.

Norway secured their spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16. This victory sets them up for a match against England in the upcoming quarter-final. The rowing celebration has become a signature gesture for Norway's team and supporters throughout the tournament.

Haaland, speaking ahead of the England clash, lightheartedly reminded Rooney of his promise. "Wayne Rooney said he was going to row if we went to the quarter-finals. So Wayne Rooney, I expect you to go out on a rowing trip," Haaland stated.

When questioned about Haaland's comments, Rooney responded by saying he would not be repeating the act but indicated that Micah Richards and Joe Hart might join him. He suggested the rowing could take place on the Hudson River if the BBC could arrange it. Rooney also confirmed his commitment to the challenge, stating, "I'm a man of my word. Micah has agreed to do it with me and Gabby (Logan). We're a team. They've agreed to it. I'll row no problem."

Haaland expressed astonishment at his team's achievement in reaching the quarter-finals, Norway's first appearance in that stage since 1998. "This is incredible, this is mind-blowing," Haaland said. "To win against Brazil and qualify for the quarter-finals was not on our bucket list. It still doesn't feel real because it's just so far off like I could never think of this happening, which also makes it so crazy in my head that we actually managed to beat Brazil and go through."

Haaland has been a prominent figure in the tournament, scoring seven goals in four matches. He is currently one goal behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé, who have each scored eight goals.
