Golfer Charley Hull recently pranked her caddie, Adam Woodward, with a fake scratch-off lottery ticket, making him believe he had won $100,000. The incident occurred in the player's lounge at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, where Hull was preparing for the Women's British Open.
Hull purchased the fake ticket from a prank shop and presented it to Woodward, who has been her caddie for over a decade. According to Hull, Woodward's reaction was significant upon scratching the ticket and believing he had won a substantial sum. He reportedly took off his hat and glasses, celebrated his supposed winnings, and declared he was taking the day off.
"He was sweating, he was trembling, he couldn't believe his luck, and we had to tell him it was fake and he nearly quit the job," Hull recounted with a laugh during a media session. "He's literally running around the player's lounge saying 'I've won $100,000, I'm taking today off.'"
The prank occurred as Hull discussed her motivation for playing in major championships. She admitted that the allure of significant prize money, which she shares with Woodward, drives her performance. "That's why I think I play so well in the majors. Even if I'm quite a lot behind, I am like, make loads of birdies today, extra dollars, for me and him to get," Hull stated.
Hull, currently ranked seventh in the world, has a history of strong performances in major championships, having finished as runner-up in three of the five women's majors. She is aiming to secure her maiden major title at the Women's British Open, which is being held in her home country.
