Paul Goldschmidt drove in the game's only run with a third-inning solo home run, leading the New York Yankees to a crucial 1-0 win against the rival Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The veteran first baseman, who had seen limited action recently, capitalized on a rare start to deliver a clutch performance.

Goldschmidt's 430-foot blast, his 17th of the season, marked his first home run since July 24 and his first RBI of August. The 38-year-old acknowledged his recent role change, stating, “I’ve had a lot of different roles this year, but that’s what they want me to do, so I’m happy to do it.” He emphasized his preparation despite fewer plate appearances, noting, “Thinking back on times like this when I didn’t get many at-bats, what I was doing on the days I wasn’t in there to best prepare, probably did help me.”

The Yankees entered the series with a two-game lead over the Red Sox for the top AL wild-card spot. Manager Aaron Boone praised Goldschmidt's professionalism and readiness. “He’s just such a humble, good leader, and just prepared,” Boone said. “He’s ready for anything. Understands the role, understands there are times this year where I couldn’t get him out of the lineup, because of where we were. Lately, it’s been a challenge with all the righties and Luis coming into the mix. He’s just been ready, a pro and he delivered in a big way tonight.”

This was the second 1-0 victory for the Yankees this season, with Goldschmidt providing the decisive blow in both instances. The previous 1-0 win came on July 24 against the Phillies, also featuring a solo home run from Goldschmidt. “We got the kid and the future Hall of Famer bookending things,” Boone commented. “I love it.” The win was vital in the Yankees' pursuit of home-field advantage in a potential wild-card matchup against the Red Sox.
