A competitive position battle is unfolding at New York Giants training camp, with veteran safety Jason Pinnock and second-round pick Tyler Nubin vying for starting roles. The competition, described as "somewhat awkward" by head coach John Harbaugh, highlights the depth and intensity of the Giants' defensive backfield as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Pinnock, who mentored Nubin as a rookie, returned to the Giants this offseason after a one-year stint with the 49ers. He is now competing with Nubin, a two-year starter, and Ar’Darius Washington for first-team reps at safety. "I think it's a credit to how well those guys are playing," Harbaugh stated. "They have played like starters for quite a number of reps."
Despite their close personal relationship, with Nubin attending Pinnock's baby shower and invited to his upcoming wedding, the competition for playing time is fierce. "That's my brother," Pinnock said. "But this is what comes with the sport. We're on each other. We're probably each other's biggest competitor, and we're on each other's ass. It just is what it is."
Nubin, who dropped 8 pounds in the offseason to improve his speed, has faced challenges in camp, giving up big plays and struggling to make tackles on breakaway runs. Last season, he recorded no interceptions in 26 career NFL games, a contrast to his college reputation as a ballhawk. He is embracing the new defensive scheme implemented by coordinator Dennard Wilson, which he believes offers more opportunities to make plays on the ball.
"I think you always got to have urgency in this league because you never know when your last snap is going to be," Nubin commented. "So, my urgency's always at a top level."
Pinnock, who started 37 games for the Giants from 2022-24, is familiar with the defensive scheme, likening it to that of former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. He expressed confidence in his ability to contribute regardless of the situation. "Opportunity arises, I just rose to the occasion," Pinnock said. "Every time you throw me in there, I'm [going to] ball. This is a new regime, so it doesn't matter that '22 to '24. It's about '26."
Washington, who has a prior connection with Harbaugh from their time with the Ravens, adds another layer to the competition with his versatility to play safety or challenge for a starting slot cornerback position. The Giants listed Nubin and Jevón Holland as starters on their initial depth chart, with Pinnock and Washington as backups, though camp performance is expected to heavily influence final decisions.
The Giants are set to face the Vikings in their upcoming preseason game, where Pinnock will be in uniform and competing for snaps. The team aims to solidify its secondary, which has been viewed as a potential weakness. "This is just full of starters," Pinnock remarked about the secondary's competitive environment. "Like, it's going to be tough, you know? It's going to be however the cards are dealt. Best man win type of thing."
