The John Harbaugh era with the New York Giants has begun with a significant roster move, as the team announced the surprising release of wide receiver Darius Slayton. Slayton, who entered the 2026 NFL season as the longest-tenured player on the Giants, was initially part of the 53-man roster before being cut.

Slayton expressed gratitude for his time with the organization via social media, stating, "Grateful for my time in NY. 7 years a Giant nothing but love for one of the most prestigious organizations in the NFL. Excited to see what’s next."

Slayton, a fifth-round pick from Auburn in 2019, provided depth at the wide receiver position throughout his seven-year tenure, despite multiple coaching changes. He recorded 740 receiving yards on 48 receptions with eight touchdowns in his rookie year, but never surpassed that touchdown total in a single season again. The receiver was also noted for some costly drops, a point of frustration for the Giants' fanbase.

His job security had been in question leading into the new season due to the acquisition of several receivers through free agency and the draft. The Giants added Calvin Austin III, Darnell Mooney, and Odell Beckham Jr. via free agency, and drafted Malachi Fields in the third round. Fields was expected to make the roster, and while Austin suffered a season-ending injury in training camp, the other additions competed for spots.

Beckham and Mooney secured places on the roster. With Slayton's release, the Giants' wide receiver corps for quarterback Jaxson Dart includes Mooney, Fields, and Beckham, alongside first-round pick Malik Nabers. Slayton's departure may signal confidence in Nabers' readiness for Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, although his official status for the season opener has not been confirmed.

The move also provides the Giants with approximately $3 million in salary cap savings, as Slayton was set to carry a cap hit of $15.9 million in 2026. Slayton may find a new team seeking depth at the wide receiver position.
