Gardner-Webb University has fired head football coach Kris McCullough after previously suspending him pending an investigation that began after his first game with the program. The university announced McCullough's suspension on Monday, declining to provide details regarding the circumstances that led to the swift action.
McCullough was suspended following a 35-17 loss to Austin Peay last Thursday. Pete Bennett has been named interim coach for the team's upcoming game against Wofford. Reports from Football Scoop indicated that the university was looking into "off the field" matters concerning McCullough.
McCullough was hired by Gardner-Webb on December 23, 2025, after serving three years as the head coach at Division II Texas-Permian Basin. His biography stated he was the youngest head coach in football when Texas-Permian Basin hired him in December 2022. During his tenure there, he led the program to playoff appearances in 2023 and 2025, and a Heritage Bowl berth in 2024. McCullough oversaw a 10-2 season in 2023, which included a Lone Star Conference title, and his final season with the school saw a program-record 11 wins, a Division II quarterfinals appearance, and a No. 3 end-of-season ranking. He is credited as the fourth coach in college football history to achieve 30 wins before the age of 30.
Prior to his time at Texas-Permian Basin, McCullough coached East Central University, another Division II program, for one season, where he compiled a 9-3 record.
In a press release announcing his hiring at Gardner-Webb, Vice President and Athletics Director Brendan Fahey praised McCullough's track record, stating, "Kris’ proven track record speaks for itself—with 37 victories over four excellent seasons, two playoff appearances, and a program that has consistently competed at the highest level. He has built a culture of excellence both on and off the field, developing young men who succeed at the next level." Fahey added, "Kris’ ability to recruit elite talent, develop players, and win championships makes him an ideal leader here at Gardner-Webb."
