Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman avoided serious injury Wednesday night when he fell down a flight of stairs into the opposing team's dugout while attempting to catch a foul ball. Freeman is uncertain if he will play Thursday night when the Dodgers begin a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers, but he expressed relief that the fall was not worse.

"I didn't hit my head, so that was the key part there," Freeman said. "I am sore. Kneecaps are sore. Shoulder is sore. Hand sore. Wrist sore. I mean, I fell. (But) I'm in good spirits."

The incident occurred in the top of the eighth inning. Freeman remained in the game and finished the inning, but was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the inning. The Dodgers went on to win the game 4-2 against the Kansas City Royals. The team announced that Freeman did not break any bones, though the right side of his body sustained the impact.

Freeman said he misjudged the distance to the dugout railing while tracking Isaac Collins' foul pop-up. "I went to lean, like I was going to lean against the rail to catch the ball - and obviously there was no rail," he explained.

At 6-foot-4, Freeman was able to fall completely into the dugout, missing the top of the stairs and landing in a space that avoided a more severe impact. "Luckily, I was tall, so I missed everything else," he said.

This is not the first time Freeman has had a fielding misadventure. He recalled falling into the seats in Arizona about a decade ago while playing for the Atlanta Braves. He also remembers the 1999 dugout fall by Mo Vaughn during his first game with the Angels.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts called the incident "very scary visually" and stated, "I think that we really dodged a bullet." He added that Freeman's good spirits are a positive sign.

The incident comes shortly after Freeman's wife, Chelsea, revealed she experienced symptoms she feared were a heart attack, prompting an emergency hospital visit. She shared her experience on Instagram, describing waking up with sharp chest and back pain while her husband was on the road.
