Four England players are walking a disciplinary tightrope at the World Cup and could miss a potential semi-final match due to yellow card accumulation.

Under tournament rules, players who receive two yellow cards across the knockout stages—the last 32, last 16, and quarter-finals—will serve an automatic one-match ban. If a player is booked in the last 32 and then again in the last 16, they would miss their team's quarter-final fixture. Similarly, bookings in either the last 32 or last 16, followed by another in the quarter-final, would rule a player out of the semi-final.

However, yellow cards are reset again after the quarter-final stage. This means a player would only miss the final through suspension if they receive a red card in the semi-final, either through a straight dismissal or accumulating two yellow cards in that match.

Players sent off with a red card, whether direct or from two yellows, receive a one-match suspension. FIFA reserves the right to impose further sanctions if deemed necessary.

This disciplinary situation puts players like Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Marc Guéhi, and Michael Olise at risk of missing key upcoming matches if they receive further cautions. For instance, Bellingham was shown a yellow card during England's victory over DR Congo, while Rice was booked early in the match against Ghana. Guéhi and Olise also received yellow cards in a previous group game against Panama.
