Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal. Castro fell to the ground during the first half of a preseason match between third-tier Real Sport Clube and top-flight side Estrela de Amadora on Saturday at the Estadio das Seixas in Lisbon.
The Lisbon Football Association confirmed that Castro passed away on Sunday morning. Real Sport Clube described the midfielder as a "beloved member of our sporting family" who left an "indelible mark on all those who knew him."
Castro joined West Brom in 2021 and made his senior debut in the Carabao Cup against Arsenal. He later appeared against Swansea City before being loaned to Burton Albion. The club stated they are "devastated" by the news and plan to pay tribute with a moment of applause in the 25th minute of their upcoming Championship fixture against Burnley, with players wearing black armbands.
Before his time at West Brom, Castro was a product of the Sporting Clube academy and played for several English clubs, including Cambridge City, York City, and Notts County. He returned to Portugal last summer.
