Football Icon Ronald Koeman Mourns Loss of Wife Bartina After Cancer Battle

Football legend Ronald Koeman has announced the death of his wife, Bartina, who passed away at the age of 65 following a battle with breast cancer. Koeman, 63, shared the news on Instagram, describing his profound sadness and immense pride in his wife.

"With intense sadness, but also with great pride and love, we say goodbye to my beautiful wife, our dearest mom and grandma," Koeman wrote in his tribute.

The couple, married in 1985, shared 41 years together and had three children and four grandchildren. Koeman posted a black and white photograph of himself and Bartina holding hands and looking into each other's eyes.

Bartina had been re-diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, coinciding with Koeman's second tenure as manager of the Dutch national team. She had previously battled and recovered from the disease in 2010, with a recurrence in 2018. Koeman revealed last year that metastases had been detected and his wife was undergoing treatment.

During his time managing the Dutch national team, Koeman publicly acknowledged Bartina's unwavering support, stating, "My wife Bartina supported and encouraged me every day, despite her own illness, to finish my work as national coach. That is a testament to incredible strength. I am more grateful to her for that than I will ever be able to put into words."

Beyond her role as a supportive spouse, Bartina had established her own successful career as an entrepreneur, owning a cosmetics and skincare line.

Following the announcement, Koeman has received an outpouring of condolences and tributes on social media. Former goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar offered his "deepest condolences and wishing you all much strength together as a family." Several Dutch national team players, including Denzel Dumfries, Brian Brobbey, Ryan Gravenberch, and Nathan Ake, responded to Koeman's message with heart emojis.

Koeman, who previously managed Premier League clubs Southampton and Everton, has not taken on a new managerial role since departing the Dutch national team after their elimination from the World Cup. The team was defeated by Morocco in the round of 32.
