Football Australia has issued a statement backing under-fire coach Tony Popovic, whose decisions during the World Cup campaign have drawn significant criticism. The Socceroos were eliminated from the tournament by Egypt in a penalty shootout in the round of 32.

Despite the team's exit, Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler defended Popovic's decision-making, particularly concerning the substitution of goalkeeper Maty Ryan just before the penalty shootout. "Every fan will think about what can be done better, but the coaching staff and Tony Popovic are always in the best place to judge in that moment what is needed for the team," Kugeler said. "In hindsight, everyone always knows better, but you have to make those calls in the moment based on what you've seen in training, what is your impression in talking to the players."

Kugeler added that Popovic has the organization's "absolute confidence" and indicated that the FA is satisfied with the decision to extend his contract. He highlighted Popovic's role in guiding the team to direct World Cup qualification after a difficult period and praised the achievement of reaching the round of 32 in the World Cup.

Critics pointed to several gambles and unusual team selections throughout the tournament. One notable decision was playing the inexperienced Patrick Beach over captain Maty Ryan, a gamble that initially paid off with Beach making crucial saves. However, Beach was withdrawn before the shootout, and Ryan failed to save any penalties, including a panenka from Egypt's Mohamed Salah.

Further scrutiny was placed on the selection choices, particularly the decision to not consistently play forwards Mohamed Toure and Nestory Irankunda together. The pair featured in Australia's 2-0 victory over Turkiye, but Irankunda was rested against the USA and then tasked with playing a lone attacking role against Paraguay and Egypt. "One of the criticisms Popovic faced was over the decision to not play Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure together after their opening win," the report noted. Australia were knocked out on penalties by Egypt meaning they are still yet to win a World Cup knockout tie.

Football director Heather Garriock expressed satisfaction with the tournament's overall outcome, stating, "there's always more left in us." Despite making the knockout stages, the Socceroos struggled to score, with their only goals in the latter stages being an own goal against Egypt. The team's focus will now shift to the AFC Asian Cup in January.

"He took us to direct qualification, a winning streak of 11 games, building depth of the squad - and then let's look at this World Cup," Kugeler stated. "So getting out of a very difficult group and qualifying for the round of 32 has been an enormous success. So, yes, we're absolutely happy about the decision to extend this contract. He is the right person to now take this group into the next major tournament and apply all the experiences, all the learnings from this tournament into the next major tournament."
