U.S. Soccer announced that striker Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in the upcoming FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium. The decision comes after a controversial red card Balogun received in a previous game was overturned.
Balogun, who is the U.S. team's leading goal scorer in the tournament, will be available for the match in Seattle. U.S. Soccer confirmed its acceptance of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee's decision. "We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow," the organization stated. "Our full attention is on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans."
The red card was issued following an incident during the match against Bosnia. However, the nature of the infraction did not align with typical offenses warranting immediate ejection or suspension. FIFA rules define red cards for severe actions such as spitting, biting, serious foul play, violent conduct, or denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity through handball. Balogun's offense did not fall into these categories, nor was it a result of accumulating two yellow cards.
The reprieve for Balogun is considered a significant boost for the U.S. attack as they prepare to face Belgium in the knockout stage of the tournament.
