Enzo Fernandez has been omitted from Chelsea's matchday squad for the second consecutive match, fueling speculation about his future at Stamford Bridge as Premier League rivals Manchester City reportedly prepare a £100 million bid.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed the midfielder's absence for the Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion, stating the decision was made with the club's best interests in mind. "We think what is best for the team and the club," Alonso told Sky Sports. "Sometimes we need to make tough calls; we don't know what will happen in the future. But today it was better that we have this squad, and in the future we don't know what is going to happen."

The 25-year-old was also left out of the squad for Chelsea's League Cup second-round victory over Luton Town earlier in the week. Following that match, Alonso indicated the decision was a collective one made with the club hierarchy.

"It was a decision from myself and from the club," Alonso said after the Luton game. "We had other players that needed minutes and it was that way. It's a decision that I took. He's a good professional. He's training well. I have nothing to say about him."

Prior to the Luton match, Alonso had expressed confidence that Fernandez would be involved. However, his name was absent from the 20-man squad announced on Thursday evening. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Alonso emphasized the need to assess the entire squad to maintain balance.

"We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. He has shown it. We have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop," Alonso stated. "We assess the whole squad as a unit and in that squad, we want good balance in terms of quality, in terms of positions, in terms of personalities, so we are aware of everything and we are prepared for whatever."

Manchester City is reportedly preparing a £100 million offer for Fernandez before the transfer window closes on September 1. However, reports suggest Chelsea would reject such an offer, valuing the player at £120 million.
