John Fitzgerald, the newly named head soccer coach for Molloy College, is embarking on a unique coaching journey this fall alongside his son, Sean Fitzgerald. The pair are not only coaching the Molloy Lions but are also working together with the American Soccer Club in the NPSL, where Sean, 23, is a player on his father's team.

This father-son collaboration extends beyond the sidelines. Sean, a former player for Molloy and Binghamton, brings his understanding of the game to their coaching discussions. "His strength as a player has been his ability to read and understand the game. ... And that’s translating into even our coaching discussions," John Fitzgerald told The Post. He noted that their car rides between practices often involve discussions about the game, though Sean has learned to signal when he needs a break from the constant soccer talk.

Sean has been described as fiery on the pitch and actively participates in training sessions with the Lions, demonstrating plays for his teammates. "It’s good because he can help demonstrate and kind of paint the picture," John Fitzgerald said.

The Molloy Lions have started their NCAA season with a 1-0 record under the Fitzgeralds' guidance. The American Soccer Club is preparing for an opening-round match in the U.S. Open Cup against Osner’s FC, scheduled for September 13 at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.

"I realize how fortunate I am to get to do this with Sean," John Fitzgerald stated, reflecting on their shared experience in the sport.
