Bolton Wanderers midfielder Xavier Simons was sent off for an apparent punch during the club's Carabao Cup match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. The incident occurred early in the second half with the score level at 0-0.
Simons, 23, was reportedly pulled back by Sheffield Wednesday's Harry Gray. In what was described as a "moment of madness," Simons then appeared to swing at Gray and connect with his midriff. Gray fell to the ground, and the action sparked a melee among players. Referee Elliot Bell immediately showed Simons a red card.
Bolton manager Steven Schumacher commented on the incident after the match. "From the angle I've seen it from this side, it looks like Xav has reacted and lashed out, which he knows you can't do," Schumacher said. "It's a poor decision, and it's a decision that you wouldn't expect from him. It's the first time I've seen him do that since he's been here, and I'm sure he'll be disappointed with it."
The dismissal proved costly for Bolton, as Sheffield Wednesday went on to win the match 1-0 with a 70th-minute goal from Jamal Lowe. The result eliminated Bolton from the Carabao Cup.
Simons joined Bolton from Hull City ahead of last season and played a significant role in the team's promotion from League One. He spent five years in Chelsea's academy before making one first-team appearance for the London club during the 2021-22 campaign. He has also had loan spells at Fleetwood Town and Wycombe Wanderers.
