Everton's attempt to sign Folarin Balogun from Monaco has fallen through after the player opted not to complete the transfer. The deal, which had been renegotiated following an initial agreement of £40 million, collapsed after an issue emerged during the player's medical assessment.

Balogun, a United States international striker, is understood to have made the decision not to proceed with the move. Everton had submitted a deal sheet before the transfer window closed at 11:00 PM BST in an effort to finalize the signing.

The striker had become a late target for Everton after Guinea-Bissau forward Beto completed a permanent transfer to Serie A club Fiorentina. Everton also explored moves for Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee and Aston Villa's Tammy Abraham but were unsuccessful in convincing either player to join.

In other transfer activity on deadline day, Everton secured Jack Grealish on a season-long loan from Manchester City. Grealish, 30, previously spent the 2025-26 season on loan with Everton, making 20 appearances before a season-ending foot injury in January. He expressed his desire to reunite with manager David Moyes, stating that he feels most valued at Everton, citing the affection from the manager, teammates, and fans.

During his prior spell with Everton, Grealish, who joined Manchester City from Aston Villa for £100 million in August 2021, scored twice and provided six assists in 20 appearances. He was named Premier League Player of the Month for August of that season. He had returned from injury prior to Manchester City's Community Shield defeat against Arsenal on August 16 and featured in their opening Premier League match of the 2026-27 season.

Everton also completed the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from French club Lyon. The 29-year-old former Arsenal player, who has five caps for England, can play as a full-back or in midfield.

Meanwhile, Scottish right-back Nathan Patterson has finalized a permanent move to Serie A club Torino. Patterson, 24, joined Everton from Rangers in January 2022 and made 68 appearances across all competitions for the club.
