SportsCenter anchor Gary Striewski has faced criticism following an account of an interaction with Juju Chan, the fiancée of golfer Sahith Theegala. Striewski recounted the encounter in a TikTok video, detailing how he approached Chan and Theegala at a coffee shop in Connecticut during the Travelers Championship.
According to Striewski, he recognized Chan from her social media presence and, finding himself seated next to her while Theegala waited for coffee, he leaned over and asked, "Has anyone spotted you yet?" Striewski stated he felt the question was appropriate given Chan's public social media activity, noting that he himself had a positive interaction with someone who recognized him shortly after.
Chan, however, has disputed Striewski's narrative, asserting that the interaction did not occur as he described and that he is perpetuating a false story. She stated that she found his opening question uncomfortable and did not recognize Striewski at the time. Chan, a social media influencer, felt Striewski's conduct was unprofessional and accused him of encouraging negative attention towards her. "The interaction that he’s explaining did not happen the way he’s saying it did," Chan posted on social media. "He’s continuing to let people believe a false narrative."
Theegala publicly supported his fiancée, commenting on her post, "That guy should have never put you in a position like this… I love you so much, and I’m incredibly proud of how you’ve handled it, my queen." He added that those close to them know her true character and how caring she is.
Striewski later posted another video addressing the criticism, including comments about his appearance while attempting to apologize, but this did not quell the controversy. The incident has drawn attention to the dynamics of public recognition and the expectations of privacy for individuals associated with high-profile athletes.
