Michael Chandler, the England World Cup team bus driver, has been identified as the author of a poignant poem written for the squad after their semi-final defeat. The poem, titled "Lions Way," was shared by England's star player Jude Bellingham on his personal Instagram account.

Bellingham, who scored six goals during the tournament, stated that he was "really struggling to find the right words" following the team's exit from the competition at the hands of Argentina. He felt Chandler's poem "pretty much hit the nail on the head" in capturing his emotions during their time in Kansas.

The four-page poem, according to reports, emphasizes the importance of mental resilience, self-control, and squad unity when facing adversity. It begins with the lines, "The Lion does not boast aloud, or chase the praise of every crowd. He knows the roar that shakes the night is born when fear is met with might."

Chandler also expressed his admiration for the England team and their supporters on an England fans Facebook page. He described the team as having "attitude, fortitude and humbleness" and urged the country to give them a hero's welcome upon their return.

"To the people of England, you're extraordinarily blessed to have such an awesome representation of what true honour looks like," Chandler wrote. "Their coming home. Show them the love and devotion of a grateful country."

He added that he had been humbled to serve as the team driver through the tournament's highs and lows, noting that the players "Never once did they waver from being stellar gentleman."

Chandler explained that his experience as the dedicated driver for the England National team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup inspired him to document the matches in poetry. He felt compelled to give his final poem to Bellingham, who in turn honored him by posting it online. Chandler concluded by expressing his gratitude to the players, stating that they exemplified "humbleness and grace" and were "truest examples of what honour looks like."
