England secured a 3-0 series whitewash against Pakistan in the third Rothesay Test at Edgbaston, overcoming an early morning scare to reach their target of 130.
Pakistan's bowlers created early pressure on the fourth morning, with Mohammad Abbas taking two wickets in the opening over. Had Mohammad Ali not delivered a no-ball on his 17th of the series, England could have been reduced to 35 for three, with captain Joe Root potentially dismissed.
Root faced several close calls, including an inside edge that narrowly missed his stumps on 23 and two further edges that fell near first slip. He went on to score 50 off 57 balls. Pakistan's acting captain Shan Masood, deputizing for Babar Azam, also used a review for a leg-before-wicket appeal against Root that was unsuccessful.
Abbas appeared to favor a different ball from the umpire's box, which he used to dismiss Ben Duckett on the first ball he faced. Emilio Gay was also given out leg before wicket by a ball from Ali that nipped back.
England began their pursuit of 130 runs, a total that had been successfully defended by Pakistan only once previously in Test history against New Zealand in 1993. The hosts ultimately chased down the target, with Jordan Cox hitting the winning run after capitalizing on a misfield. Cox reached his third score of 50 or more in the series during the chase.
