England will be without defender Jarell Quansah for at least two potential matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals and semifinals, following an increase in his suspension from one to two games. Quansah received a straight red card for a tackle on Mexico left back Jesus Gallardo. Although the initial play was not penalized on the field, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review led to the dismissal.
FOX rules analyst Mark Clattenburg stated that the tackle involved significant speed and that Quansah's foot went over the ball, catching the opponent's leg. "I never had any doubt because not many people can defend that this is not a red card," Clattenburg said.
Fellow analyst Dr. Joe Machnik agreed, citing excessive force and a lifting of the studs-exposed leg into the opponent. "I believe they felt that the one game wasn't enough," Machnik commented.
Clattenburg further explained the rationale for the two-game suspension, noting that challenges which could potentially end a player's tournament should warrant more than a single-match ban. He described the tackle as exceeding a normal situation, making the two-game suspension a fair and consistent decision in line with FIFA's past actions in similar circumstances.
"This is a big question because what we've seen in this World Cup is unprecedented, especially with Flo Balogun's one-match suspension," Clattenburg said. "In the past, this type of challenge would automatically receive two matches: one automatic and one for the nature of the challenge."
He referenced a previous incident in the tournament where a Qatar player received a five-match ban for breaking a Canadian player's leg. "So they look at the challenge, they look at what the impact was, and make a decision. And I believe that two matches is fair and consistent. Take the Flo Balogun situation out, it's consistent with other tournaments," Clattenburg added.
England will face Norway in the quarterfinals, and if they advance, Quansah will also miss a potential semifinal match against the winner of the Argentina-Switzerland game.
