The Mid-American Conference (MAC) is characterized by its competitive parity, where similar programs with comparable resources vie for the championship. As the 2026 season approaches, Bowling Green, led by head coach Eddie George, is being eyed as a potential contender despite a 4-8 overall record and 2-6 conference standing in 2025.

Last year's co-favorites for the MAC title are Western Michigan and Miami (Ohio), both at +375, followed by Toledo at +425. The conference has not seen a repeat champion since Northern Illinois in 2012. Given the MAC's reputation for unpredictable outcomes, a long shot pick like Bowling Green, currently priced at 16/1, presents an appealing option.

While George's debut season saw a losing record, the Falcons demonstrated flashes of potential. They secured notable victories, including a comeback win against Toledo and an upset over Liberty. Although the team struggled in the latter half of the season, going 1-5 in their final six games, three of those losses were by six points or less. The season concluded on a positive note with a decisive victory over UMass.

These performances suggest that Bowling Green was more competitive than their record indicated. Year two under George is expected to bring further improvement. The program has leveraged George's coaching legacy to attract talent through the transfer portal, notably securing former Oregon quarterback Austin Novosad and several key contributors from the FCS level.

The offense, with Novosad at the helm, will need to show marked improvement to contend for a championship. However, a strong defensive unit, which graded well by MAC standards in 2025 and is expected to strengthen, could provide a solid foundation. If the offense can achieve incremental gains, the gap between Bowling Green and the conference favorites could narrow significantly, making the 16/1 odds a compelling wager.
