During a tie game in the sixth inning against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran was visibly upset by a baserunning decision made by teammate Willson Contreras. Contreras, who had singled to start the inning, did not advance from third base on Duran's shallow fly ball to left field, a decision that prompted Duran to yell from the dugout for him to "Run!"
The Red Sox went on to win the game 5-4, with Wilyer Abreu and Contreras hitting back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to secure the victory. Contreras ultimately did not score in the inning where Duran's frustration was evident.
Following the game, Duran acknowledged the difficulty of judging fly balls at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, where the Athletics are playing while in transition between Oakland and Las Vegas. "It's a tough park to play at," Duran said. "It's kind of tough to see."
Duran also downplayed the dugout incident, stating that such occurrences are regular within the team and not a matter for public knowledge. "That's nothing," Duran said. "It's something that, within the team, that we have, that we work on, and it's nothing. Like, you guys don't need to know. Nobody needs to know. ... So, that doesn't really matter."
Contreras, however, expressed confusion over Duran's reaction, noting that many observers believed he would have been thrown out had he attempted to advance from third. "I wasn't sure. I mean, I love Jarren. He's one of the guys that plays with emotion, plays 100%," Contreras told reporters. "We love him here. And he's one of the guys that if I need to go to war, I'm gonna pick him because he's gonna give his 100%. I saw him doing some stuff. I would never take that personal. I love the guy, and we need the guy here. We need his energy. And I don't know. I haven't talked to him yet, but it's nothing personal."
Duran is currently experiencing the most challenging season of his MLB career, batting .195. His name has been a subject of trade rumors for approximately two years. With the MLB trade deadline approaching, Duran's future with the Red Sox, who are currently on a 19-4 streak in July, remains a topic of discussion. The team recently acquired infielder Curtis Mead from the Washington Nationals for left-handed starter Connelly Early, though Mead was subsequently placed on the injured list.
