Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski has been added to the National League's All-Star Game roster as a replacement, the team announced Saturday. The selection comes just three days before the Midsummer Classic is set to take place in Philadelphia.
Wrobleski, a 25-year-old left-hander, joins five other Dodgers who were initially selected for the game. With his addition, the Dodgers now tie the host Philadelphia Phillies for the most All-Star selections in MLB this season.
The news comes after Wrobleski expressed disappointment at not making the initial roster. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had advocated for Wrobleski, stating that the pitcher "performed enough to earn that opportunity." Wrobleski has compiled a 10-2 record with a 2.69 earned run average this season.
Some Dodgers players may not participate. Shohei Ohtani is opting out to receive treatment for his knee, and Yoshinobu Yamamoto's status is uncertain depending on how he feels after his final start. Wrobleski, however, pitched most recently on Tuesday and is expected to be available for the game.
This selection marks a significant achievement for Wrobleski, who has emerged as an All-Star starter after previously being a triple-A pitcher and swingman reliever.
