Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones was observed in a heated exchange with several teammates immediately after the club's pre-season victory against Wrexham. The incident occurred on the pitch following the Reds' second pre-season match, which saw teen talent Rio Ngumoha score the decisive goal.
Video footage captured Jones, who was substituted into the match in the 50th minute, speaking animatedly with Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai. Szoboszlai appeared to attempt to de-escalate the situation. Jones then turned away from Szoboszlai and became involved in a conversation with Kostas Tsimikas and Jeremie Frimpong. Reports suggest Frimpong intervened, appearing to prevent Jones from escalating the confrontation further. Frimpong eventually led Jones away from the immediate area.
The circumstances surrounding Jones's apparent frustration come amid ongoing speculation about his future at Anfield. The 25-year-old midfielder is reportedly nearing the end of his contract, and Liverpool has been firm on their valuation. Inter Milan recently had a second offer of approximately $21.7 million (£17 million) rejected, as the club seeks a fee between $35 million and $40 million (£28 million to £32 million) for the player.
Jones has reportedly been frustrated with his playing time towards the end of the previous season under former manager Arne Slot, often finding himself out of the starting lineup. Despite this, Liverpool maintains that they do not wish to force the player, who has been with the club since boyhood, out of the door. However, there are currently no active negotiations for a new contract, indicating a divergence in expectations between Jones and the club.
In contrast, academy graduate Trey Nyoni, who played limited minutes in the Premier League last season, impressed during the match at Yankee Stadium.
