Cristiano Ronaldo stated he would have no regrets following Portugal's 1-0 elimination from the World Cup in the round of 16 against Spain. The 41-year-old forward became emotional on the pitch in Dallas after Mikel Merino's stoppage-time goal secured Spain's victory, marking the end of Ronaldo's historic World Cup career.
Ronaldo, the only player to score in six World Cups, will conclude his international career without the sport's ultimate prize. He had confirmed prior to the match that this tournament would be his last.
"It’s been my last World Cup, yes - but now I will have time to think, stay with my family and life continues," Ronaldo said after the match, reinforcing his decision.
He emphasized that his focus is not on regret, citing Portugal's past achievements under his leadership. "I will wake up tomorrow with a clear conscience, because I gave my all," he stated. "I won three titles for Portugal, and Portugal had not won any before me. My biggest title with Portugal is Euro 2016. That trophy means the same to me as the World Cup."
Portugal's Euro 2016 victory and two Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025 are among the significant honors he has achieved with his national team.
Footage of Ronaldo heading down the tunnel after the match drew comparisons to his emotional departure from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he also shed tears following Portugal's elimination by Morocco. Although he managed to hold back tears this time, his devastation was evident as he walked alone with his head bowed.
Ahead of the Spain match, Ronaldo had spoken about cherishing the experience. "It's about enjoying it as much as possible," he said. "This will be my last World Cup, but let's hope tomorrow isn't my last game."
Ronaldo, who moved to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr in 2023, has not indicated any plans for immediate retirement from football. He is currently pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals, sitting just 24 shy after scoring in Portugal's previous victory.
