Argentina and Tottenham defender Cristian Romero did not shake hands with former U.S. President Donald Trump after receiving his World Cup runners-up medal.
Trump, alongside FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, was present on stage to present awards following Spain's 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time. As runners-up, Argentina's players received silver medals. After Infantino placed Romero's medal around his neck, the defender appeared to ignore Trump and walked directly to his teammates.
The moment was captured on video and circulated on social media. Trump remained on stage as Spain captain Rodri accepted the World Cup trophy, standing beside the Spanish squad during their celebration. At one point, Infantino seemed to gesture for Trump to leave the stage, but the former president remained.
Fans in the stands booed as Infantino and Trump made their way onto the pitch for the medal and trophy presentation. The final was decided by Ferran Torres's goal in the 106th minute. Argentina committed 24 fouls and had Enzo Fernandez sent off at the end of normal time.
The match concluded with unsavory scenes as some Argentinian players reacted aggressively to Spain's celebrations. Leandro Paredes was sent off for striking Eric Garcia and pushing Gavi, while Nahuel Molina also punched Rodri. Thiago Almada was also involved in the altercations.
