Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen stated he will "evaluate everything" at the quarterback position after Daniel Jones' latest struggles led to a 42-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. The team's sixth loss of the season has raised questions about Jones' future as the starter.
Jones was benched with 11:53 remaining in the fourth quarter, having completed 19 of 28 passes for 144 yards and throwing two interceptions. The former Giants quarterback has faced criticism for his performance this season.
"I’ve got to play better," Jones said, according to the Indy Star. "I’ve got to execute more consistently, put the team in a position to score points and win these games." He noted that his quarterback rating of 39.5 is the second-lowest of his career, and his 60.4 percent completion rate is the worst.
Jones signed a contract extension with the Colts in March, but its structure reportedly allows the team to move on if necessary. "I think right now with everything going on and where we are, keeping your focus on what’s here, what’s right in front of us, how to improve day after day, is most important," Jones told ESPN.
Anthony Richardson, the Colts' fourth overall pick in 2023, entered the game late, completing both of his pass attempts for eight yards. Richardson expressed his support for Jones, stating, "He’s got my full support, I’m supporting him 1,000%. It’s tough to play quarterback in this league, it’s tough to play quarterback in general."
