Dominic Peterson, a 19-year-old sophomore at Saint Mary's College in California, died after suffering a medical crisis during a run with his teammates. The incident occurred on Friday on a public jogging path in Moraga.
School president Roger Thompson confirmed that Peterson experienced a medical emergency and was transported to a local hospital, where he passed away. The specific details of the medical crisis have not been disclosed.
"This is heartbreaking for our community and our deepest sympathies are with his family and loved ones," the college said in a statement. The school described Peterson as having a "contagious smile" and noted his consistent effort and encouragement of others.
A memorial service was held on Saturday morning at the school's chapel.
Saint Mary's men's basketball team issued a tribute, calling the event an "unimaginable loss" and emphasizing the college's identity as a family that supports each other.
Peterson was also honored by his former teammates at California Grizzlies Rugby, who recalled him as a leader and captain during tours to the Great Northwest Challenge, Japan, and Argentina. The club expressed their heartbreak at losing "one of our leaders."
