Coco Gauff has advanced to the US Open semifinals, overcoming a challenging match against Mirra Andreeva. Gauff secured her spot in the final four by winning the thriller 2-6, 7-6(7), 6-2.
After dropping the first set, Gauff admitted to resetting her approach, drawing inspiration from fellow American Frances Tiafoe's comeback victory earlier in the tournament. "I was trying to leave the court with no regrets," Gauff stated after the match. She acknowledged that Andreeva was playing exceptionally well in the initial set.
Andreeva, the French Open champion, started strong, building a significant lead in the first set. Gauff struggled initially, appearing frustrated at times. However, she managed to force a tiebreak in the second set, where she showcased her best level to eventually send the match to a deciding third set.
Supported by a partisan crowd, Gauff took control in the third set, breaking Andreeva's serve to lead 3-1. Andreeva's frustration became evident later in the set when she threw her racket, prompting a pause in play. Gauff then closed out the match.
Gauff is now scheduled to face the newly crowned world No. 1, Elena Rybakina, in the semifinals. Rybakina advanced after defeating Zheng Qinwen. Gauff also keeps alive the possibility of an all-American final, as Jessica Pegula is competing in the other semifinal on the opposite side of the draw against Aryna Sabalenka.
