Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney publicly rebuked a reporter on Tuesday for questioning his offseason roster-building strategy following the Tigers' significant 51-10 season-opening loss to LSU. The team's performance in Baton Rouge has drawn widespread criticism, including from former Clemson players.
Former defensive end Xavier Thomas expressed disappointment on social media, stating, "first time our preseason ranking has been right .. in a long time." Ex-tight end Jordan Leggett described the offensive and defensive line play as the "softest I have ever witnessed," and former defensive tackle DJ Reader called the game "sad to watch" as an alumnus.
Clemson was outgained by nearly 500 yards in the game, marking the most lopsided defeat during Swinney's tenure. Acknowledging the criticism, Swinney stated, "You play like that, you deserve to be criticized." When pressed about his offseason decisions, he responded, "No I don't. I regret being 0-1 right now. I regret that."
Swinney characterized the reporter's question as premature, asking, "Can you ask that at the end of the season? The season ain't over. We've had one game and we have 11 more. What if we go 11-1? Promise me you will ask me that then (and) I will answer that. But I'm not answering questions like that."
The loss to LSU, compounded by a disappointing 2025 season where Clemson finished 7-6 overall and seventh in the ACC, has intensified scrutiny on Swinney's position. Swinney is in his 19th season as head coach with a record of 187-54, including two national championships and nine ACC titles. However, some analysts believe the program's performance has declined in the era of name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals and the transfer portal.
ESPN analyst Paul Finebaum suggested that Clemson's athletic director should consider firing Swinney, stating that "on the national stage, (Clemson's) time is up." According to reports, terminating Swinney's contract would cost Clemson approximately $57 million.
Swinney has faced criticism for his comparatively limited engagement with the transfer portal. LSU, for example, reportedly added 48 transfers this offseason, while Clemson brought in 15. This difference in approach has been cited as a factor in the program's recent struggles.
Former LSU defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko commented on X (formerly Twitter), "It's very sad to see one of the greatest college coaches, Dabo Swinney, get pushed out the game financially. When you think about all the coaches NIL/portal forced out of college football, it´s sad. You either retire a hero or coach long enough to become the villain."
Swinney declined to specify his plans for the quarterback position for the upcoming home opener against Georgia Southern. He noted that both Christopher Vizzina and freshman Tait Reynolds struggled against LSU, with Vizzina grading out slightly better but not by a significant margin. Swinney added that decisions regarding playing time at quarterback "will work itself out."
