Christian Horner is expected to make his return to the Formula One paddock this weekend at the British Grand Prix, his first appearance since controversially leaving his role at Red Bull a year ago. Horner, 52, was relieved of his responsibilities at the Milton Keynes-based team 48 hours after last year's Silverstone event, following a power struggle within the parent company. He reportedly received an £80 million severance package and has been free to pursue other opportunities since March.
During his time away, Horner has reportedly engaged in country pursuits and spent time with his wife, Geri Halliwell-Horner. However, he has openly stated his belief that he has "unfinished business" in Formula One. It is understood that Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Muhammed Ben Sulayem, who are both reportedly backing his potential return to the sport, have invited him to Silverstone as their guest.
Horner's extensive track record includes 20 years of success at Red Bull, where he masterminded eight drivers' and six constructors' championships. His tenure saw championship victories with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Aston Martin team principal Lawrence Stroll is noted as a long-term admirer of Horner's achievements. Senior sources have indicated to the Daily Mail Sport that Stroll has recently rekindled his interest in Horner's services.
Beyond Aston Martin, other potential avenues for Horner include a senior position at Ferrari, should a vacancy arise. He is also reportedly seeking a shareholding in one of the Formula One teams and is said to have significant investor backing for such ventures. Specifically, he has reportedly explored acquiring the 24% stake in Alpine currently owned by private equity firm Otro.
Another possibility being considered is the establishment of a 12th Formula One team, though this would represent a longer-term return to the grid, potentially delaying his involvement by approximately five years. Tentative discussions have reportedly taken place with the Chinese electric car manufacturer BYD regarding this initiative.
