Tennis Hall of Famer Chris Evert announced Thursday that her ovarian cancer has returned, necessitating a pause in her professional commitments and a missed appearance at Wimbledon this year. She has undergone surgery as the initial step in her treatment and plans to begin chemotherapy in the coming weeks.
Evert, 71, was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in December 2021. She had previously announced in December 2023 that her cancer had returned. The recent diagnosis prompted her decision to step back from her role as an analyst for ESPN and other professional duties for the next few months to focus on her health.
"Ovarian cancer is relentless, but I will stay optimistic and determined in continuing to fight this battle," Evert stated on social media. She expressed gratitude for her medical team, family, friends, and the encouragement she has received from the public. Evert indicated her intention to return to public life in the near future.
Throughout her career, Evert achieved 18 Grand Slam singles championships and has remained a prominent figure in the sport as a commentator and analyst.
